The number one provider of new- and used-vehicle information, Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com, showered recognitions this year. The latest awards announced recently are the Best New Family Vehicles for 2008. The Auto Channel reported that each qualifying vehicle was assessed in contrasting areas as space, safety and affordability after driving and reviewing several 2008 family cars for KKB.com. The group’s reliable editors stood as panelists and they were obliged to pick the winners for the said honors.

The factors that were evaluated are following: resale value, fuel efficiency, competence and, most significantly, family-friendliness. Aside from the vehicle’s water pumps these aspects were highly considered by the panel of judges before coming up with the set of winners for this year.

"Each of the models on the kbb.com 2008 Best New Family Vehicles list represents the best package of what families really look for when choosing a new car; kid-friendly options combined with the value, safety and capabilities that parents require. As Americans spend more and more time in their vehicles each year, auto manufacturers are increasingly providing great family vehicles across multiple segments. In 2008, the three-row crossover vehicle has succeeded the wagon of the seventies, the minivan of the eighties and the SUV of the nineties as the quintessential family vehicle," says Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com.

Hyundai’s i-Blue Adapts Yin Yang Concept

Let’s have some Chinese philosophy lesson here.  Are you familiar with the yin and yang concept?  It is symbolized by a circle divided into two equal parts (I wish I could just draw it for you) - one is white the other, black.  Inside each fraction are two small circles, black on the white area and black on the white portion.  Hmm… Seems like an interesting idea to spice up Acura Legend headlights, isn’t it?  If you get what I mean.

According to wikipedia.org, yin and yang, also known as heaven and earth, represents two “primal opposing but complementary principles said to be found in all non-static objects and processes in the universe.”  Yin (dark) stands for water and earth while yang (light) signifies fire and air.

Reports from AutoChannel said that the yin and yang concept was the same idea that inspired Hyundai’s new i-Blue Fuel cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV)’s exterior design.  This new hydrogen-powered, zero-emission car concept was introduced during the 100th Chicago Auto Show that started yesterday.  It features Hyundai’s third generation fuel cell technology, the first step towards Hyundai’s vision of mass-producing hydrogen-powered cell vehicles in the next 10 years.  Fuel cell vehicles, as we all know is environment-friendly for its sole emission is water vapor.

The i-Blue, like the yin yang, is an epitome of balance between elegance and safety.  Square and circle were two geometric forms employed in its design giving it a rhombus-like shape.  Its fuel cell stack is placed underfloor instead of putting it at the engine compartment thus, creating an ideal 50-50 weight distribution for smooth driving for more than 370 miles with a maximum speed of more than 100 miles per hour.

A 100 KW electric engine and fuel stack, fueled with compressed hydrogen stored in a 115-liter tank drives the i-Blue to run. Another appealing feature of this car is its full-surround camera system that enables the driver to see a virtual picture of the vehicle and the surroundings using its latest image processing techniques.   That promotes safe driving, doesn’t it?

Hyundai Motor Company is the sixth largest automaker worldwide.  It has been a member of the California Fuel Cell Partnership (CaFCP) for eight years now.

BMW Sauber Signs Klien As Backup Driver

Yes, you can stare at a new face in BMW Sauber. The F1 team sponsored by the maker of BMW Z8 parts earlier signed Christian Klien as a backup driver for the upcoming season which is set to start on Saturday. Last season, the Austrian was a test driver for Honda after racing for Red Bull in 2006.
Klein replaces German Timo Glock, who has joined Toyota. "We wanted a third pilot with experience in Formula One, said BMW Sport’s owner Mario Theissen.
Klien will be third choice after German Nick Heidfeld and Polish Robert Kubica. Klien has competed in 47 Grand Prix, for Jaguar in 2004 then with Red Bull in 2005 and 2006, picking up 14 points in the World Drivers Championships, revealed Canadian Press.
BMW Sauber has also signed Marko Asmer as a test driver. Since 2004, the 23-year-old Estonian has raced Formula Three since 2004.
Wikipedia writes:

Klien started his career in motorsport in his early teens; racing in karting championships both in Austria and Switzerland before moving up to Formula BMW. After several more titles in lower Formulas, Klien moved up into Formula One with the Jaguar Racing team, alongside Mark Webber. At the end of 2004, Jaguar’s Formula One team was sold to Red Bull and renamed Red Bull Racing; Klien shared the race seat with Italian Vitantonio Liuzzi. The Austrian stayed at Red Bull for 2006, with Liuzzi going to Red Bull junior team, Scuderia Toro Rosso.

The Formula One season starts with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne on the 16th of March.
Brace yourself for more Sauber action…Formula One will be burning hot this season. Watch out!

Asian Automakers’ US Sales Fell In January

There really is no room to relax in the auto industry. Like in driving, auto companies predict their own future by creating it. No time for naps, or else they’ll find themselves at the sales bottom just the way an Acura Legend floor mat finds its place in Acura cars.

Last year, Asian automakers Toyota, Honda and Nissan made it in the US market but things turned out differently much to their disadvantage this January.

“Toyota, Honda and Nissan all tried to finish big in December to make sure they ended the year well. It looks like they eased up this January,” said Edmunds.com analyst Jessica Caldwell.

Reports from Bloomberg.com said that Nissan Motor Co. and Hyundai Motor Co.’s decline in US sales led the Asian automaker’s drop in sales last month. Nissan, Japan’s third largest auto maker, declared that sales fell 7.3 percent compared to sales in 2007 while Hyundai’s sales dropped by 23 percent. Meanwhile, Honda Motor Co. lost 2.3 percent vehicle sales.

Based from assessments by auto analysts, the first half of 2008 would really be a rough road for Asian brands in the US.

“The consumers are really leveraged and it takes time to work that out,” said Mirko Mikelic who co-manages $22 billion at Fifth Third Asset Management in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

During last month’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit, it can be recalled that Japanese executives expressed confidence in gaining more market share.

“We still have the strength to beat the market,” Shigeru Hayakawa, Toyota’s chief executive officer said.

Japan’s largest automaker, Toyota announced a 5.7 percent drop in sales of its famous brands last month which was though balanced by a 2.2 percent increase in light trucks sales.

The New York-based Conference Board revealed that consumer confidence indeed slipped to almost a double-year low last month.

It’s gonna be another restless year for Asian automakers, I suppose.
